Description
Fox Creek is proud to host an exhibition by South Australian landscape artist, Max Ragless (1901-1981) who produced drawings, handmade prints, watercolours and oils during his 50 year career.
Max Ragless’ etchings are considered by many critics to be some of his finest work. The aquatints are soft, subtle and sensitive. They are muted, atmospheric interpretations of Australian cityscapes and landscapes. Some are so delicate that the tonal qualities make them appear ethereal and even magical.
The drypoints, in contrast, are crisp, dramatic, and occasionally sharp-edged. They are direct and succinct. The drypoints possess some remarkable qualities, when considering the simplicity of the technique of scratching on a metal plate.
His work demonstrates his incredible facility in drawing and his amazing breadth of artistic experience. All of Max’s work represents his love for the Australian landscape. The oil paintings especially, make a strong, direct statement.
