Tarkine Forest Adventures is an eco-tourism and forestry interpretation centre near Togari, north west Tasmania. Dismal Swamp is 30 minutes south west of Smithton (40 kilometres/25 miles).Dismal Swamp is a natural blackwood forest sinkhole, believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. Formed over thousands of years by dissolving dolomite, the 40-metre/130-foot deep sinkhole is a unique forest habitat supporting a range of plant and animal species. You can visit the Visitor Centre, located on the sinkhole rim and view the forest from a cantilevered walkway, suspended over the treetops. Enjoy a tasty meal and glass of fine Tasmanian wine in the restaurant, visit the forest interpretation centre or browse in the shop to choose from a range of Tasmanian-made products. The Visitor Centre showcases Tasmanian specialty timbers with a contemporary interior crafted from blackwood and Tasmanian oak.From here you can follow the walkway or take an electric buggy to the floor of the sinkhole, or take the exhilarating 110-metre/360-foot slide from the viewing platform to the swamp floor. Stroll along the timber walkway to discover this ancient environment through a series of interpretation signs and artworks interpreting the spirit of Dismal Swamp.
